TROTTING TIMES

Sir, —This morning I read that Dictation, from 96 yards, trotted 13 furlongs in 3min 25 l-ssec, 2-ssec faster than Denbry. which started from scratch. On the figures provided, Dictation’s rate was more like 3min 26 l-ssec, which is 3-ssec slower than Denbry’s rate. However, consistency has been stated to be the mark of a fool, and I must admit that the slaphappy haywirism of the 12 yards-to-the-second rule provides some comic relief to the dull, monotonous, mechanical accuracy of the totalisator and the photo-finish.—Yours, etc., CURIOUS. August 30, 1954.
