ADDINGTON MARKET

ALL BEEF PRICES RISE SHARPLY

Strong Demand For Fat Hoggets

SMALL STORE SHEEP , OFFERING

Fat * cattle met an exceptionally strong sale at the Addington Market yesterday, when beef prices rose sharply to the best figures for the seasoh. There was a short entry, and all well-finished heavy-weight cattle were dearer by £3 a head and in many cases more. Cows were in particularly strong demand and reached excellent figures. Fat hoggets were also in very strong demand and rose 5s a head on the good rates of last week. Fat sheep met a fairly steady market until toward the end of the sale when there was a general easing in prices. Good medium-weight ewes sold well, but very heavy ewes were cheaper. The store offering was small and of miscellaneous quality. Prices were about on. a par with recent rates except for shorn wether hoggets, which were 2s dearer.

STORE SHEEP A very small yarding of store sheep was offered, and for the most part quality was not impressive. With the feeling general that the spring growth ‘cannot now be far away, there was a good demand for most of the offering at prices a little firmer than last week. The tally of 1441 was made up of 183 ewe hoggets, 639 wether hoggets, 423 breeding ewes, and 196 wethers. Last week’s total was 1954. Only two pens of ewe hoggets came for. ward. One lot of Corriedales from J. Croft (Hawarden), of reasonably good quality, made 95s 6d, and a line of 104 halfbreds from Oamaru made 80s. Shorn wether hoggets met a surprisingly good demand, and were fully 2s a head above last week's rates. Others showed little quotable change, but were a shade firmer. A pen of 81 good shorn halfbreds made 625, and three lots of halfbVeds of moderate quality, totalling over 300 head, from J. Thompson (Flaxbourne) made from 46s 6d to 52s 6d. The best price for woolly wether hoggets was 74s 6d for 70 well-grown halfbreds from C. S. McKay (Halkett). Moderately good woolly lots made 62s to 675. Three pens of two-tooths were offered, and one was passed. The best, a pen of 66 useful Romney cross from J. T. Wright (Kaiapoi), made £5 16s, and the other, a small pen of mixed breeding, made 87s. The five lots. of older ewes made 65s to 81s for anything reasonably good, with a line of shorn culls at 21s. The half dozen pens of wethers made 69s to 82s for medium to good sheep. J. T. Wright (Kaiapoi) sold two small lots of two, four, and six-toooth halfbreds at 71s and 80s. SPRING LAMBS The spring lamb entry was 15, the largest so far this season, compared with three last week. Fat hoggets were in exceptional demand with prices a full 5s above late extraordinarily good rates. Few sheep in the wool made below 80s, and there were a good number of sales at more than £5. The yarding promised to be small at the. opening of the sale, but-more came in as theTßiarket progressed. The yarding totalled 580. compared with 631 last week. There was a fair proportion of good hoggets among the selection, which was generally medium to good in quality. Shorn hoggets also sold wejl. Best-hoggets in the wool fetched from £5 to £5 19s Id. good As to 995, medium 80s to 88s. Shorn hoggets made from 60s to 77s Id. Top price of the sale was £5 19s Id for one from Miss N. FAT BHEEP The entry of fat sheep was 3050, compared with 2285 last week, and was of moderately good quality. Much of the wether yarding was Ahom. There was an excellent demand for good-cutting medium and lightweight ewes, which were' about 2s a head above last week, and sold well throughout. Heavier ewes were about firm; but very heavy lots were 2s a head cheaper, and hard to sell. The inquiry for, wethers was steady for shCep in the wool, and prices were little different from last week. Among the large selection of shorn wethers, there were many lines fresh off- the shears, and these were difficult to sell. Wethers shorn a month or more sold well at full late rates. In the veal section quality was far from attractive. Good suckers were in short supply, while bigger cattle predominated.
