NEWS FOR WOMEN WELL-WISHERS REPLACE COUPLE’S BURNT HOME
(New Zealand Preu Association)
AUCKLAND, September 1. Mr and Mrs C. Barker, of Birkdale, Auckland, will soon have a neat home with a floor space of 750 square feet. It will have cost them only £3OO. Three years ago, Mr and Mrs Barker lost their uninsured bach and possessions in a fire. Credit for the Barkers' change of fortune goes to neighbours and wellwishers as far south as Christchurch, who formed a trust fund for the couple. Volunteers built the diningroom, bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen of the
new house. This took £3OO of the £4OO fund. The Birkenhead Borough Council, which held the remaining £lOO in trust has now released it to Mr Barker, who is working on a livingroom and bedroom to complete the home the volunteers built during week-ends after the fire. The extensions will cost Mr Barker £3OO. Remembering the volunteer work, building materials given by firms, and gifts of cutlery, linen, and clothing, Mrs Barker says: ‘‘Everyone has been so marvellous. We just haven't been able to thank them all.”
