Church Sees “Serious Moral Problem”
SUPPORT OFFERED TO SAFETY COUNCIL
“Reckless driving, carelessness in traffic, and indifference to the welfare of other people have become a serious 'moral problem,” said the Rev. C. E. Dickens, presenting the report of the public questions committee to the North Canterbury Methodist District Synod in Christchurch yesterday. “The endeavour to awaken the sense of personal responsibility and consideration of others, especially for children and the disabled, has the warm support of the church,” he said. The synod approved a recommendation by the committee that the Government be congratulated on the endeavours to meet the serious social problems of death and injuries by road accidents, and that Methodists be called to observe traffic regulations strictly, and to give every encouragement to improved standards of road courtesy. A motion moved by Mr W. A. Bascand. and suggesting that the committee should offer its assistance to the Road Safety Council by using illustrations in church literature, and that the committee should investigate the use of Bible class wall space for poster displays, was passed.
