BIGGER STAKES AT WASHDYKE

SOUTH CANTERBURY CLUB’S PROMISE Increases in stakes for meetings conducted by the South Canterbury Jockey Club and the provision of better amenities at the Washdyke' racecourse are promised in' the annual report of the chairman* of the club (Mr H. J. R. Somerville). The report says that the club is in a position to make those moves, with the help of large dividends from the Totalisator Agency Board. The club’s off-course total for the four days’ racing last season was £144,883, against £110,650 for the previous year. The club received a dividend of £2284 Us 3d from the T.A.B. for the year ending July 3171953. As the amount invested off-course throughout New Zealand was much higher this year than last year, the club’s dividend from the T.A.B. would appear to to be considerably greater than that received for the year ended July 31, 1953. * The club profit for the year was £2062 8s 3d, and the club’s assets now exceed liabilities by £3476 Is 6d. Main items of income were:—totalisator, £12,008 17s 7d; nominations and acceptances, £2218 19s; gate takings, less amusement tax, £1521 17s sd; T.A.8., £2284 Us 3d. The club distributed £9175 in stakes, and totalisator costs were £2216 18s Id. The racecourse -rent was £2216 18s Id, and salaries and wages amounted to £1877 14s 4d.
