STOCK EXCHANGES HEAVY TRADING IN FIRM MARKETS Markets were active on the Christchurch Stock Exchange yesterday, a large volume of business being written in a wide range of stocks. Although one or two Australian-based shares w’ere cheaper, markets generally were firm at late rates. Buyers continued to outnumber sellers in the proportion of about two-to-one. Indeed buyers quoted for a total of 124 Issues and sellers for only 64. Commercial. Bank of Australia varied m sales at 17s 2d (unchanged) and 17s Id, with more on offer at the lower figure. National of Australasia naids returned to the sales list in a transaction at 31s 6d, and the market closed with buyers at 31s and sellers at 32s 6d. New South Wales

were wanted at £33 10s—no- sellers. A few more sellers appeared for gas shares, and insurance remained very quiet. The preponderance of buyers in the loan and agency section was less marked. Unsupported sellers-again appeared for Dalgety s issues at I2s 9d, and significant perhaps of the unchanged New Zealand Farmers’ Co-operative dividend rate was the return of sellers for ,the company's “A” and “B” preferences, but in both cases they were wide of steady buyers at 14s 3d. . Goldsbrough Mort had sales and buyers at the unchanged price of 34s 6d. Electro. Zincs dropped sharply to sales and buyers at 295. Booth, Macdonalds recovered 3d in a sale at 6s, with further buyers limiting their offers' to 5s 6d. Another sharp advance was registered by New Zealand Forest Products ordinaries in business at 16s, and at the fclose buyers offered 15s lOd against sellers* quote of 16s Id. Woolworths, Ltd’s., rights, were slightly firmer, and the company’s shares sold at the steady price of 15s 6d. Buyers for Coles quoted 15s 4d on a market bare of sellers. . DOMINION TRANSACTIONS
