N.Z. THIRD GRADE TOURNEY

WELLINGTON MINOR WINS FINAL (New Zealand Press Association) WILLINGTON, Sept. 1. The Wellington Minor team won the final of the New Zealand women’s third grade basketball tournament when it beat Eastern Bay of Plenty, 16-10, at the Hataitai courts today. Northland became the runner-up when it beat Eastern Bay of Plenty. 24-13. The Violet Gibson trophy for the team in the New Zealand first, second, and third-grade tournaments that had the least number of goals scored against it, was won by Otago, with South Auckland second. Results today were:— Section I.—South Auckland 12. Auckland Minor 7; Eastern Bay of Plenty 18, Temuka 14; Canterbury 30, Wairoa 9; South Auckland 18, Hawke’s Bay 15. Section ll.—Wellington 16, Kaikoura 10; Waikato 20, Poverty Bay-East Coast 6: Wellington 13. Northland 11; Waikato 14, Thames Valley 13. Section Hl.—Otago 21, Wairarapa 5; Te Kawau 16,'Putaruru 13; Otago 13. Central King Country 6; Taranaki 18, Hokitika 13. Semi-finals.—Te Kawau 17, Central King Country 13; Eastern Bay of Plenty 21. MAORI TEAM LEAVES FOR ROTORUA

The first South Island Maori basketball team left Lyttelton for, Rotorua last evening. It will play in the 51-team Maori tournament on Friday, and against a team selected from the North Island players on Saturday. Tlie team was selected last week after the Maori basketball tournament on August 21. The 11 players win take part in the A grade games, with nine other teams. They will return on Monday.
