FIREWOOD AREAS IN FOREST

RELIC OF EARLY DAYS

In the early days of Canterbury fahners taking up properties on treeless land adjacent to a beech forest located on country which now comes within the Ashley, forest, were apparently given the option of taking over small areas, mainly of 20 acres, in the forest as firewood areas. The New Zealand Forest Service has recently been taking over the last of these areas —at least the last that are known. The Conservator of Forests, Mr L H. Bailey, said yesterday tjiat there were at least 22 of these areas within the boundaries of the 12,000-acre forest. They were mainly of 20 acres, but they ranged from 10 io 40 acres. Farmers might have used timber from them for posts in addition to firewood, he said but there were no signs of their having been used for many years. The Forest Service has gone to a great deal of trouble to locate the rightful owners of the areas. In some cases the land had been forgotten over the years, and owners were-unaware of its existence. In one case .an owner was last traced to Sydney in the 1880’s Where it has not been possible to locate owners the areas have been taken over under the Public Works Act.
