HIPPOPOTAMI INJURED IN FIGHT AT AUCKLAND ZOO
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, August 31. Nada and Bella, the Auckland Zoo’s two female hippopotami, have fallen out. Last Friday, the two had a fight, with the result that Nada is feared to have either a broken or dislocated hind leg, and Bella has several cuts on her back. But the problem is for Mr R. W. Roach, the zoo’s director, to obtain a good look at Nada and make a proper diagnosis of her troubles. Since she was injured, Nada has stayed in her
pond, and no persuasion will make her move.
Since their fight, the hippopotami have been kept apart. Nada's chances of recovery depend on keeping her in the water, and to help her to rest the leg. the water in the pond has been raised from four to five feet in depth Before deepening the pond, the keepers nearly drained the pool in an attempt to get Nada to move so that . soa<5 oa< ; h could look at her.
