CONSERVATOR OF FORESTS
MR A. P. THOMSON FOR CANTERBURY
RETIREMENT OF MR L. H. BAILEY
Mr A. P. Thomson, who is at present working plans officer at the headquarters of the New Zealand Forest Service in Wellington, wilt become Conservator of Forests for the Canterbury district from the beginning of next year. He will succeed Mr L. H. Bailey, who will retire on superannuation at the end of the year after slightly more than 40 years in the Government service. Mr Bailey has been conservator for the Canterbury district /or the last six years. Mr Thomson has the degree of bachelor of science in forestry. He served overseas during World War II with the New Zealand Forestry Company. He held commissioned rank. For a time he was assistant conservator of forests at Rotorua-
Mr Bailey is a foundation member of the Forestry Department, which was-established in 1921. v , Up to that time forestry functions had been performed by the forestry branch of the Lands Department. He was formerly ranger in charge at Karioi, near Tengawai, and at Whakarewarewa, and for eight years he was ranger in charge at Kaingaroa For two years before he came to Canterbury Mr Bailey was forest fire officer for New Zealand at the head office of the service in Wellington. «_ A Canterbury man, Mr Bailey was born at Templeton and educated at Templeton primary schol and Christchurch Boys* High'School. In World War I he served overseas with the Ist Battalion of the, Wellington Regiment, and rose to the rank of captain.
