REPAIRS TO PIGEON BAY WHARF
INCREASE OF CARGO BY LAUNCH
Repairs to the Pigeon Bay wharf, which, it was stated, was carrying an increasing amount of cargo by launch to and from-Lyttelton, were authorised by the Akaroa County Council at a recent meeting. It was reported that so far this season, the launch, besides handling the output of the Pigeon Bay dairy factory, had taken to Lyttelton 248 bales of wool as against 60 for the whole of last season, as well as general cargo inwards. Cr J. B. Hay said that if the Little River railway closed down, it might pay other Peninsula dairy factories to ship their output rather than send it to port via road and rail. It was decided that the council’s new crusher should' crush 5550 yards of metal for the needs of the WainuiFrench Farm-Barry’s Bay area, and then transfer operations to a quarry on the Summit road before December 1 to provide metal for main highways. The makers asked the council to pay £655 for extra work done on the crusher, which cost £5832. The chairman (Mr H. J. Mortlock) said he thought that the only legitimate item would be one’of £92 10s for extra labour. It was decided that the chairman, Cr. Hay, and the Clerk (Mr A. G. Foreman) should discuss the subject with the makers.
The resignation of the county foreman (Mr W. A. Watson) was accepted. Four residents in the county, on the outskirts of Akaroa Borough, wrote objecting to any suggestion of amalgamation yrith the borough.
