SHIP’S STEWARD RETIRES

MR C. H. BABBAGE SIGNS OFF HINEMOA

Mr C. H. Babbage, chief steward of the Union Steam Ship Company’s inter-island steamer Hinemoa, has retired after 46 years at sea. He signed off the Hinemoa at Wellington yesterday. Mr Babbage, who was born in Essex, first went to sea as a cadet-steward in 1908 in the Orient Line vessel Omrah. In 1911 he joined the New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner Rotorua as steward. Settling in New Zealand, he served in the coastal vessels Poherua and Komata. He was in the Canterbury Steamship Company’s vessels until the First World War, when he enlisted and served in the Rifle Brigade. Returning to the sea, he was appointed chief steward of the Kaiapoi in 1928. In recent years he has been chief steward of the old Maori, the Rangitira, the Wahine, and the Hinemoa, and has also been relieving manager of the company’s Grand Pacific Hotel atuSuva.
