SHIRLEY BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL

400 PUPILS TO BE ACCOMMODATED

A second boys’ high school for Christchurch at Shirley has now been approved by the Minister of Education (Mr R. M. Algie), who has authorised the preparation of sketch plans to provide for 400 pupils. The site is south of the Shirley Intermediate School. Informing the Christchurch Postprimary Schools’ Council of this approval yesterday, the Assistant Director of Education (Mr C. G. S. Ellis) said that the start on preliminary planning would be delayed for a short time to enable incorporation of the findings of the Education Department’s mission (led by Mr Ellis) which recently studied educational building in Britain. In an interview in Christchurch on his return from overseas some weeks ago, Mr Ellis said that a lot of useful information had been gained on the better use of space. The Post-primary Schools’ Council was gratified at another prompt action by the Minister after recent discussions in Christchurch, said the chairman (Mr W. J. Cartwright). The new school would give further relief to accommodation needs, and it would also satisfy the demand for another boys’ high school in Christchurch. Consideration would next be given to building schools on sites already acquired at Aranui and Burnside road, where there was rapid development in housing, said Mr Cartwright.
