DOMINION THIRD GRADE TOURNAMENT

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 31. A brilliant win by a strong Northland side over Waikato Minor in the second section of the New Zealand third grade basketball championships at Hataitai Park, Wellington, has made the team favourite for this year’s Kiwi trophy, the winner of which will be decided tomorrow afternoon. Otago appears the most likely to extend Northland in the final. The championship winners in 1952 and 1953, Canterbury Sub-associations, have been disappointing this year. Results today were:— First Section.—Auckland Minor 11, Wairoa 9; Hawke’s Bay Minor 19, Temuka 18; Eastern Bay of Plenty 19, South Auckland 18; Temuka 28, Canterbury Sub-asso-ciations 25; Hawke’s Bay Minor 21, Auckland Minor 17; South Auckland 9, Canterbury Sub-associations 9; Temuka 28, Auckland Minor 7.
