AVOIDING CARGO CONGESTION

IMPORTERS URGED TO Co-operate The Canterbury Chamber of Commerce is urging its members to clear cargo promptly, so that congestion at Lyttelton and in the railway sheds and yards at Christchurch may be avoided. Relaxation of import restrictions is expected to increase the flow of goods from now until the end of the year. “Advice has been received from the Overseas Shipowners’ Allotment Committee asking for co-operation in the prompt clearing of cargo in order to avoid congestion at Lyttelton and in the railway sheds and yards at Christchurch,” says the secretary of the chamber (Miss I. V. Shrimpton) in a circular to members. “They point out that the considerable relaxation in import restrictions has permitted the importation of an ever-increasing volume of general cargo during 1954. necessitating an increase in sailings from the United Kingdom for arrival in New Zealand, from now until the end of the year. “As members will be aware, a peak for inward cargo is likely to occur within the next three months because of the arrival of Christmas stocks, and this chamber recommends all those concerned to co-operate to the fullest extent in clearing consignments. It will be to the advantage of all to minimise congestion,” the circular says.
