CRAYFISH EXPORTS

OPPOSITION URGES RESTRICTION

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 31. Opposition members in the House of Representatives today claimed that New Zealand’s needs were being ignored in attempts to build up crayfish exports to dollar countries. The House was discussing the vote on the estimates for the Marine Department. The vote was passed. Mr A. H. Nordmeyer (Opposition, Brooklyn) called for an investigating committee to go into all phases of the fishing industry. He added that far too high a proportion of crayfish and blue cod went overseas. The resulting shortage in New Zealand forced up prices to the consumer, he said. Mr P. G. Connolly (Opposition, Dunedin Central) said that crayfish exports should be limited to 50 per cent, of the catch. At present, 83 per cent, went to America. Mr A. S. Sutherland (Government, Hauraki) said New Zealand crayfish, '‘served with little tail, but lots of flourish” was a great delicacy in California restaurants. Mr C. L. Carr (Opposition, Timaru): I can’t go there for my crays. Mr Sutherland: But they are great dollar earners.
