“N.A.T.O. Grows In Importance”
(Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, August 30. A spokesman for the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation said tonight that the death of the E.D.C. at the hands of the French Assembly “makes N.A.T.O. more important than ever” as the main instrument of Western defence.
N.A.T.O.* circles are generally unhappy about the result of the Assembly vote, but they felt, as a definite decision has at last been taken, that they now know where they stand. The N.A.T.O. Council will meet on Wednesday, but this may be too early for the pact Governments to have formulated any plans for action. Since N.A.T.O. member Governments have been holding back comment on the E.D.C. so as not to appear to be pressing the French Assembly in its decisive debate, the pact’s spokesman could not add further official comment tonight.
