BY-ELECTION FOR MAYORALTY

DEPUTY-MAYOR TO STAND AS INDEPENDENT (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, August 30. Shortly after the conviction today of James Mackie Deas, former Mayor of Otahuhu, for a breach of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1933, the present Deputy-Mayor (Mr J. D. Murdoch) was approached and agreed to stand for the mayoralty in the byelection to be held on October 9. Mrs R. V. Fulljames, a member of the council on the Labour ticket,* who brought the prosecution against Mr Deas "for the public good,” said today that she was supporting Mr Murdoch’s nomination. It is believed that four other members of the council are supporting Mr Murdoch’s nomination, as well as several other Otahuhu residents previously prominent in local body affairs. Mr Murdoch, who topped the poll on the Labour ticket at the last council elections, said he would stand as an Independent. "I am heartily fed up with politics entering into local body affairs,” he added. Mr Deas is still considering whether to contest the Mayoralty again.
