ATOM-POWERED AIRCRAFT

FIRM “WATCHING DEVELOPMENTS” LONDON, August 29. Spokesmen of both the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Supply Ministry today would not confirm a report by the Sunday newspaper, “Reynolds News,” that Britain would have an atom-powered aircraft within five years. The report says that the Government will call a top-secret conference of atom scientists, aircraft designers and technicians _ early next year to pool ideas on building an atompowered military aeroplane to compete with ode under construction in the United States. Spokesmen of the Civil Aviation and the Supply. Ministries said they knew of no such conference. According to “Reynolds News,” Mr Henry Knowler, technical director of the aircraft firm, Saunders-Roe, said last night that his flrm was watching developments. “It should “be possible to produce a military aircraft capable of carrying a normal crew, in addition to a ’pocket-sized reactor used for driving turbine engines with propellers or ducted fans,” he is reported to have said. ■ - - » But he warned: “The enormous costs of building an atomic aircraft preclude the manufacture of civil atom aeroplanes for many years.’’
