RUGBY FOOTBALL MATCH AGAINST OTAGO

CANTERBURY TEAM ANNOUNCED Only about half of the Canterbury team which defended the Ranfurly Shield last Saturday against Waikato will be taking part in tomorrow’s match, against Otago, at Dunedin. D. D. Wilson is the only back from Saturday’s team included in the team. . . , Several of the replacements have already played in at least one Ranfurly Shield match this season. Wilson may be at second five-eighths for this match. The inside tacks may have a difficult task matching L. F. Townsend, R. Archer, and H. L. Smith. The Canterbury team will be: D. Mayo; C. A. McDonald, D. Taylor, R. Blick; D. D. Wilson, B. J. McCormick; P. J. Creedy; J. J. Small; S. F. Hill, L. Davies. J. H. Mauger, K. F. Meates; J. D. Stewart, K. Fincham, E. Bullmore. Reserves: J. Waine. I. Rathgen. . Players should assemble at the Christchurch railway station today at 8 a.m. —Advt. SHIELD MATCH WITH TARANAKI MR I. L. ARMISHAW TO BE REFEREE (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 30. The New Zealand Rugby Union advised today that Mr I. L. Armishaw (South Canterbury) would referee the Ranfurly Shield match between Canterbury and Taranaki on Saturday. BENEFIT MATCH ON OCTOBER 2 USE OF LANCASTER PARK w GRANTED Permission for the Canterbury Rugby Union to use Lancaster Park on October 2 for the Colin Bailey benefit match was given by the Canterbury Cricket Association’s management committee at its meeting last evening. The chairman (Mr T. A. Tucker) said the playing of football on the park in October would create a precedent. Mr W. E. Mappiebeck said a NorthSouth match had been played there on October 1 one year. They got the park late enough, said Mr Tucker. Would it make any difference to the preparation of wickets? It had been guaranteed that cricket would be back on the oval at the usual time, said Mr Mappiebeck. They were all sympathetic, and should help if they could, said Mr Tucker. Perhaps the Rugby Union would agree to the association using the ground on April 2 if required to finish a match. Mr Mappiebeck said the union would agree to that. AIR TRAINING CORPS TOURNAMENT An Air Training Corps Rugby team, representative of town and school units throughout file South Island, flew to the R.N.Z.A.F.
