ROLE OF JAPAN IN PACT

“Grave Danger” Seen By Rhee

(Rec. 10 p.m.) SEOUL, August 29. President Syngman Rhee, of South Korea, said today in a statement on the forthcoming S.E.A.T.O. conference in Manila that Asians would rather take their chances against communism than be ruled by Japan again. Mr Rhee saw "grave danger” in the preliminary moves towards a Southeast Asia alliance against communism. He said the United States “appears to be in favour of making Japan a key Power of such an arrangement, and of building up Japanese military strength to the point of Asiatic preponderance. “This is the surest way to doom all hope to free Asian unity,” said the statement.

“Between Japanese and Communist domination the free Asiatics can see little choice, and they will take their chances against the Reds rather than submit to new dictation from Japgn. “What happened at Pearl Harbour can happen again. It is almost “certain to happen if the United States recreates a Frankenstein monster of Japanese militarism and permits it to turn its force against other Asian nations.”
