MINER SEVERELY INJURED
PINNED UNDER FALL OF STONE (From Our Own Reporter) „ GREYMOUTH, August 21. For more than 45 minutes a miner was pinned by two large pieces of stone which fell from the roof of his working place in the Wallsend State coal mine on Friday. He was Mr Donald Frederick Hillier, a married man, aged 32, of Wallsend. Mr Hillier was taken to the Grey Hospital suffering from a fractured pelvis, an injury to his back, a fractured leg, and severe shock. His condition during the weekend was reported to be satisfactory. Mr Hillier was working at another miner’s face when the fall occurred, his companion having left the area only a few minutes before the fall. Rescue operations were begun immediately the fall was discovered, but the rescue attempts were hampqred by additional bad” stone above the scene of the accident. Rescuers were required to use jacks to release the injured man. Two other miners met with accidents while working on Friday. Leonard JaWis,of67 Fitzgerald street, Cobden, suffered injuries to his back while working in tlie Strongman mine, and Michael Garvey, of Ward street, Runanga, suffered lacerations to a hand and a fractured bone in the hand. Their condition today was reported to be satisfactory. CYCLIST INJURED IN FALL Petrie Joseph Watson, of 31 Wai-itl road, Timaru, suffered head injuries when he fell from his cycle near the New Zealander Hotel about 1 a.m. yesterday. He was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital, and his condition last evening was reported to be fairly satisfactory.
