FIRE SPREADS OVER 12,000 ACRES
BURNING-OFF OPERATIONS OUT OF CONTROL

The worst fire in the Strath Taieri district as a result of burning-off operations covered about 12,000 acres of high country on Friday night and Saturday. u The blaze, which could be seen from Uunedm late on Friday night, was on the Dry Ridge area between the Taien river and the MiddlemarchMacraes Flat road.

The fire got out of control at 3.5 p.m. on Friday. About 15 farmers tried to control the fire on Friday night, but it was a losing battle. They were joined later bv about 40 others. The fire became easier to control, and by noon yesternay the worst of the work was over. Tonight farmers in the district said that their sheep losses amounted to only 2 per cent.
