MISHAP TO FERRY AT AUCKLAND

CONCRETE STEPS OF SEA WALL RAMMED (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. August 20. A young couple leaped for their lives today when the ferry boat Kestrel overshot its berth and rammed the steps where they were sitting on the sea wall at Quay street. A dozen persons on seats outside the shelter behind them jumped to their feet as the Kestrel struck the steps with a shuddering blow almost headon. About 20 people aboard the boat hung on to their seats or hugged the side as the impact threatened to throw them to the deck. The Kestrel was coming in to berth from Northcote. She failed to stop at the bertlk. and carried on about 20 yards into the wall. The crash buckled and splintered a section of the bows on the port side and sprung the coping [iron clear tor several feet, but not a ; window was broken. A jagged hole was torn in the solid concrete steps.
