CURRENT NOTES

Mrs Colin Deans (Masterton), who has been visiting Mrs Maurice Macfarlane, Armagh street West, left for Blenheim yesterday with her sister. Mrs, P. P. I* Dillon, with whom she will spend a few days before returning north. Miss Marie Nicholls (Taihape) is visiting Mrs Murray Louisson (Fendalton) . Miss Diana Hill, daughter of Mr and Mrs Herbert Hill, Heaton street, has returned from a visit to England.

Miss Christine Harris, who is to be married at the end of this week, was the guest of honour at a small 5 o’clock party given at Elizabeth House on Saturday by members of the Middle Watch of the Navy League. Miss Harris was formerly a member of the committee of the Junior Navy League, and when the Middle Watch was formed she was elected to the first committee. On behalf of members. Miss Natalie Vale, president of the Middle Watch, presented a gift to Miss Harris and wished her happiness. A few weeks after her marriage, Miss Harris and her husband will leave for England.

Dr. A. Hunter, who left New Zealand in 1946 to study medicine at the University of • Edinburgh, returned last week from Canada with his wife, and is staying with his parents, Mr and Mrs A. Hunter, Peterborough street. Mr A. MeNeill was the guest speaker at the August meeting of the ShirleySt. Albans Garden Club, and gave a talk on the cultivation and development of polyanthus. Mrs J. K. Moloney presided. Competition results were: best bloom of the month, Mrs H. Thompson 1, Mrs T. Locke 2, Miss M. Wilkie 3; egg cup posy, A grade, Mrs Locke 1, Mrs T. McMillan 2, Mrs E. R. Reay 3; B grade, Mrs A. F. Excell 1, Miss C. Graham 2, Mrs B. Hale 3; collection of vegetables for soup, Mrs A. F. Excell 1, Mrs J. Lee 2, Miss Wilkie 3.

More than 20 residents of Wesley Lodge, the Methodist eventide home in Park terrace, were taken for an outing in private cars to Rangiora oh Saturday. They were entertained at the new Methodist Church in Rangiora by women of the parish. The outing was organised by Lady Andrews, who is a member of the board of management of the Methodist Central Mission.

Eleven children were cared for in the creche by Mrs Sanders and Mrs Woodhead at the monthly meeting of the St. Martins-Huntsbury branch of the League of Mothers. Five new members were admitted. Mrs Tarrant, a member, gave a talk on girlhood memories of Derbyshire and college life at Cambridge.

“Wales, in Song and Story" was the theme of the evening social of the Christchurch Welsh Society. Mr James Griffiths (vice-president) presided. Items were given by Mesdames G. Sergeant and Jones-Brock, and Messrs Wynne-Owen and J. Harris (topical verses, own composition). The Welsh news was read by Mr W. Green. The accompanist was Mrs Bronwen Roberts. The president (Mr R. WAmc-Owen) said that he had cabled the society's congratulations to Mr W. J. Roberts, the treasurer, who is visiting Wales, on the honour of being chosen as leader of Welsh people from all parts of the world visiting the Royal National Eisteddfod in Wales this month. Mrs C. E. Boon presided at the August meeting of the BeckenhamHuntsbury Garden Club and welcomed three new members. Mr M. J. Barnett, Director of Parks and Reserves, spoke of the work necessary in preparation for spring planting. He also demonstrated the correct method of pruning hydrangeas and other 1 shrubs. Good business was done at the sales table in charge of Mrs V. Claude and Mrs W. Abrams. The hostesses were Mrs R. Box, Mrs Campbell, and Mrs Cooper, and the stewards, Mrs E. T. Johnson, and Mrs Couling. Mrs S. Brown judged the monthly competitions, which resulted:—Bowl of spring flowers, A grade, Mrs Elcock 1; B grade, Mrs Sparkes 1, Mrs Hawthorne 2, Mrs Heywood 3; arrangement of stylosa and erica, A grade, Mrs L.
