Referendum On Hotel Hours In N.S.W.

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) SYDNEY, August 13. The people of New South Wales are to be asked at a liquor referendum whether they want the closing hours to be 6 p.m. or 10 p.m. The State Government probably will hold the referendum in November. The referendum will fix the closing hours for the sale of liquor in all licensed premises—hotels, wine saloons, and clubs. The State Labour caucus has not yet .decided if it will amend the Liquor Act to compel registered clubs to stop the sale of liquor at the hour fixed by the referendum. At the last referendum in 1947 the people voted in favour of all licensed premises closing at 6 • p.m. The Minister of Justice announced the day after the referendum that 6 p.m. closing would apply to clubs as well as hotels, but the Supreme Court later ruled against this decision.
