ALL-AMERICAN TITLES
GOLF
WINS FOR BARBER AND BABE ZAHARIAS
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) CHICAGO, August 8. Jerry Barber won the All-American golf championship today with a 72-hole aggregate of 277—11 under the standard scratch
Barber had a final round of 69. Gene Littler, who also had a 69 today, finished second on 278. Peter Thomson (Australia), the British open champion, who led the field at the beginning of the third round, scored a 73 today and finished third on 279. Babe Zaharias scored a record 294 in winning her fifth all-American women’s professional title. Mrs Zaharias was nearly disqualified. She handed in a wrong final round score card instead of a 75, but tournament officials waived the usual penalty of disqualification under a United States Golfers’ Association clause permitting such action under “unusual circumstances.” The rules chairman, Mr Arch Matson, said Mrs Zaharias was mobbed by photographers as she finished and was unable to check her card properly before she handed it in. In addition to the first prize of 1000 dollars, Mrs Zaharias won 1500 dollars for a record-breaking second round of 69. Scores of the leaders were: Babe Zaharias. 77, 69, 73, 75—294; Louise Suggs, 76, 76, 74. 76—302; Jackie Pung, 76, 72, 77, 78—303.
