WIDOWED MOTHERS

Sir, —I am glad to see the widows with children being so well cared for. At the same time widowed mothers with no dependept children, who have brought up their children under very trying conditions when things were not so good, deserve a little consideration. I am a widowed mother, 48 years of age, Unable now to do part-time work, since I collapsed. All my married life and widowhood I have done part-time work—house work, when there were not so many machines. My pension was £2 10s a week for two children and myself. There was no family benefit for widows in those days. I had a house at a cheap rent, but it had no sink or bathroom —only the washhouse. It made extra work carrying bath water in and out, as well as trying to do part-time work for some other person. —Yours, etc., WIDOW. July 23, 1954.
