AUCTION FOR CHURCH FUNDS

About £l5O was raised for church funds and only a few pairs of secondhand shoes were left over after the last “knock-down” at the White Elephant auction held at St. James’s parish hall. Kiccarton, on Thursday evening. Bidding was spirited among the 200 people present and the highest price received was £8 for an oak drophead cabinet sewing machine. Several lots of odds and ends went for Is, which was the lowest price taken. Some customers went away delighted with their bargains, while others realised afterwards that they had paid more than their purchases were really worth.

“We were extremely pleased with the financial result of the sale and to see all the goods cleared away ” said the vicar of St. James’s Church, (the Rev. Carl Tanner) yesterday. The left-over shoes would bg sent to the City Mission at St. Martins House-of-Help for disposal, he said.
