MAGISTRATE’S COURT

FRIDAY (Before Mr L. N. Ritchie, S.M.) CYCLIST DRUNK Arthur Harris, aged 50, a labourer, was fined £3 on a charge of being found drunk while in charge of a bicycle in Barbadoes street on July 22. REMANDED A youth aged 17, whose name was ordered not to be published, was remanded on bail to July 30 on two charges of theft and two of unlawful conversion of motor-vehicles, for consideration of an application by Mr J. G. Leggat, representing the accused, that the case be referred to the Children’s Court.

TRAFFIC OFFENCES The following persons were prosecuted by the police for breaches of the traffic regulations, and penalties were imposed as stated:— Failing to give way.—Arthur Edward Barton, £2; Albert George Barton, £2; Owen By field, £2; Albert James Crocker, £2. Using a motor-vehicle without due care.—Barry Thomas Minett, £2; James Joseph Malachi McKeever, £2 (no warrant of fitness, 10s); Olive Jean Williamson, £2.

No warrant of fitness.—Colin Bertram Payne, 10s. Riding unlighted cycle at night: Brian Watson Dingwall,* £1 (no bell, 10s; no red light, 10s). Proceeding against traffic lights: Robert Lindsay Hanna, £2. WARRANT FOR ARREST Ronald Alan Peters did not appear to answer charges of failing to give way to the right and giving false information about an accident. On the application of SeniorSergeant A. B. Collinge, the Magistrate issued a warrant for the arrest of Peters. Senior-Sergeant Collinge said that Peters had disappeared since the summons was issued. He had left home and his parents did not know where he was. He had relatives in various parts of the country, and the police had made inquiries from them without result. The charge of giving false information about an accident was more serious than the usual run of traffic cases, and the police considered it should not be dopped just because Peters could not be found at present. MOTORIST FINED £l2 10s Graham Douglas Weir pleaded guilty to driving a motor-car without due care and attention, having no warrant of fitness, and failing to stop after an accident.

He was fined £2 on the first charge. 10s on the second, and £lO on the third. . Senior-Sergeant A. B. Collinge said that Weir was driving an old model car along Burnside road on June 7 when his car struck a parked car at the corner of Ilam road and severely damaged it. Weir did not stop. The owner of the parked car and a friend followed Weir, and stopped him about a mile further along Bumside road. Weir was learning to drive at the time, but had a licensed driver with him. It was raining heavily at the time. Weir told the Court that his passenger said that the windscreen wiper on the passenger’s side was not working. He leaned across to look at it, and must have inadvertently pulled the wheel to the left. He had every intention of stopping, but his nerves were badly shaken and he was waiting until they steadied before he went back. The Magistrate said the Court could suspend his licence on the first charge or, if he did not have one, prevent him from obtaining one for a period. In view of his explanation, this would not be done.
