(Rec. 9 p.m.) HANOI, July 20. The Indo-China war at a glance: Duration: Started December 19, 1946. Casualties: About 92,000 dead or missing in the French Expeditionary Force, 114,000 wounded, 28,000 prisoner. Figures for the Associated States vague, but bring the total casualties to minimum of 253,000. Vietminh casualties unknown. Cash Cost: A total of 8,152,000.000 dollars, including United States aid. Biggest Battle: The Dien Bien Phu siege which ended on May 7, 1954, with the worst French defeat after a 55-day fight. About 16,000 French Union casualties, and 20,000-25,000 Vietminh casualties. Turning Point: The Battle of Caobang on the Chinese border in July, 1950. For the first time the Vietminh rebels organised into regular battalions which were to swell into divisions later. Chinese aid started arriving, which later was to rise to 6000 tons a month. Chinese technicians arrived. The Vietminh started receiving training in Communist China. Vietminh Gain: Some 77,000 square miles of territory, 12,000,000 inhabitants in Northern Vietnam, Hanoi, the Pearl of the Orient,” the. major port of Haiphong. the huge Red River delta rice D °Vietnam to Keep: Some 50,000 square miles 11.000.000 inhabitants, the Southern Cochin China rice bowl, the capital of Saigon.
