ADDINGTON MARKET

FAT CATTLE DROP SHARPLY

Small Store Sheep Entry ONLY SIX PENS OF HOGGETS Fat cattle prices dropped sharply at Addington stock market yesterday. On an average values were 30s to £2 under late rates. Fat hoggets were yarded in only very small numbers. The best were up to about 2s dearer and lighterweights were selling on a par with recent values. Best fat wethers continued to sell steadily with lighter-weights cheaper. Some outstanding sheep were included in the offering. They sold at up to £6 5s Id. Ewes were up to Is dearer. In the store sheep section there was one of the smallest yardings for very many weeks. Only six pens of store hoggets were forward. There was a sizeable entry of ewes but with the spell of wintry weather continuing the demand for them was inclined to be less keen. Values declined by up to 2s. STORE SHEEP As was to be expected with the continuation of the current wintry spell of weather, the store sheep market was not very active, and the very small number of sheep yarded were not looking their most attractive in the misty rain that fell during the sale. Altogether only 1363 head of store sheep came forward, compared with 2960 last week, making it the smallest yarding to date in the' winter store sheep sales. The entry was made up of only 196 hoggets, 1026 ewes, and 141 wethers. Except for odd lines of ewes quality was of very average description.

The hogget entry was made up of only about half a dozen pens, and they were not of outstanding quality. Wether hoggets sold from 54s to 62s 6d, and ewe hoggets from 65s 6d to 745, the top price being paid for 57 halfreds from T. W. Stephenson and Sons (Hornby). The entry of store ewes was fairly large for this time of the year, with nearly 400 sheep coming from one farmer who is clearing his stock. But with the present sort of weather farmers are generally not very keen to take on more stock at this stage and the demand was inclined to be easier. Values ranged from about par to 2s easier. The best of the ewes made to £5 Is, with good selling at 74s to 84s, medium 66s to 735, and others down to 565. A small pen of 22 in-lamb two-tooth Corriedales from R. J. McLaughlin (Lakeside) made £5 Is each, and H. R. Ffitch (Cheviot) sold the tops of his offering of 373 sheep at £5. The latter price was paid for 133 two-shear Romney cross ewes in lamb to South Suffolk rams. Mr Ffitch also sold 52 full-mouth halfbred ewes in lamb to South Suffolk rams at 665, 117 three-shear three-quarterbred ewes in lambs to South Suffolk rams, at 84s, and 71 four-year three-quarterbred ewes in lamb to South Suffolk rams at 70s. A. Banks (Coutts Island) disposed of 90 fail-ing-mouth Romney ewes in lamb to South Suffolk rams at 745, and C. Wroote (Southbridge) sold 61 full and failingmouth Romney ewes in lamb to Southdown rams at the same price. The small offering of wethers realised from 37s 6d to 675. D. Costello (Ofieviot) was paid 67s for 35 shorn two-tooths and E. G. Saunders (Oxford) realised 66s for 20 two-tooths. FAT HOGGETS A very limited selection of fat hoggets came before buyers and they were not of very attractive quality. The offering totalled 386 compared with 325 last week. For all classes there was again a good sale. The few good quality lambs were selling from fully firm to 2s to 3s dearer and lighter sorts continued to sell at

Wethers met a good market at the beginning of the sale, but later the demand appeared to become erratic and at the finish only the best quality were in good demand. In the offering were a few pens of weathers of quality superior to anything seen at Addington for some time, and the best of these sold to £6 10s Id for two from Mrs M. Watson (Wakanui). STORE CATTLE There was one of the smallest yardings for many weeks in the store cattle section. Apart from odd pens, the quality of the offering was not impressive, but for anything showing breeding, prices showed a firming tendency. Among quotable lines were the following:—seven 20-months Friesian steers at £27 3s 6d: 13 Aberdeen Angus steer calves at £2l 18s 6d; 10 Aberdeen Angus and Hereford steer calves at £24 13s sd; 14 Aberdeen Angus and Hereford heifer calves at £23 18s 6d; a pen of Hereford heifer calves at £2l 3s 6d; and seven Friesian cows at £lB 3s 6d. VEALERS Vealers were yarded in similar numbers to. recent sales and the quality was reasonably good. Prices remained firm at late rates. Prime large runners made £3O 3s 6d, medium £l6 8s 6d to £2l 16s: best suckers to £24 13s 6d; medium, £l5 Us to £l9 Is; large calves. £8 18s 6d to £l5 Is; small, £3 18s 6d to £8 8s 6d. DAIRY CATTLE In the dairy cattle section, there was an entry of about 55 head. The cows were much below the quality of those yarded last week, a fair proportion of them being backward and of inferior quality. For those still a long way off calving the demand was not so keen Cows nearer u profit were still in demand, but they were a shade easier. The entry of heifers was small, but it was of rather good quality. Values were about late rates. Best second, third, and fourth calvers sold at £3l to £3B, medium £25 to £3O. and aged and inferior and backward sorts down to £ll. Best heifers realised from £35 to £45, with two Friesian sales at £53 and £54, and other classes sold down to £lB 10s. FAT PIGS The porker entry was a little smaller than last week, and contained mostly good quality pigs. Comjßetition was keener from the outset and values were better by 3s to 4s a head. Choppers were forward in medium numbers and the sale was again a good one at values fully up to last week’s rates. In the bacon section the entry was small and here again the sale was a good one, with values 3s to 4s a head better. Values were:— Light porkers, £5 12s 6d to £5 19s 6d. Medium porkers, £6 4s 6d to £7 14s 6d. Heavy porkers, £7 19s 6d to £8 12s 6d. Choppers, £ll Is to £l7 Us. Light baconers, £9 19s 6d to £ll 8s 6d. Medium baconers, £ll 12s 6d to £l2 7s 6d. Heavy baconers, £l2 12s 6d to £l3 14s 6d. STORE PIGS In the store pig section, the entry was much larger than last week, and included seven sows in pig. The attendance of buyers was much larger. Competition opened cautiously at values similar to last week, but weaners improved by 5s to 6s a head as the sale progressed. Sows in pig made from £l5 to £27. Values were:— Small weaners. 58s to 68s. Best weaners, 70s to 82s. Slips. 75s to 80s. Small and medium stores, 81s to 935. Large stores, 96s to 105 s.
