EMPIRE GAMES TRAINING
ATHLETICS
YVETTE WILLIAMS WORKS HARD “MOST CHARMING GIRL COMPETING ” VANCOUVER, July 20. The world broad jujnp champion, >New Zealander Yvette Williams, already has won the reputation of being the hardest-working athlete taking part in the Empire Games. Entered in four events —the broad jump, hurdles, discuss and shot put—she is one of the first to arrive each morning at the training track, and among the last to leave. She puts in two hours’ work each morning.
She seems likely to win a gold medal in the broad jump, and many favour her to win both the discus and shot put. In the hurdles she is not likely to head off Australia’s Gwen Wallace.
Miss Williams is also attracting some attention away from the training track. A Vancouver columnist called her: “The most charming girl competing in the games.’’
