DELAYS IN TOLL CALLS
BIG IMPROVEMENT EXPECTED (From Our Parliamentary Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 21. Eight more toll circuits between Wellington and Christchurch had just been brought into use with two new carrier toll'systems, and delays in toll traffic between the two cities should be reduced considerably, said the Postmaster-General (Mr W. J. Broadfoot) in the House of Representatives today.
Delays had been up to 60 to 90 minutes in busy periods. By a rearrangement of circuits a further two toll circuits were available between Nelson and Christchurch.
Further relief would come in September, said the Minister, when the radio-relay link being established between Wellington and Christchurch was brought into »service. That very high-frequency system operated on a line of sight path, and reached Christchurch from Wellington with four hops. Intermediate repeating stations would be near Ward, at Kaikoura. and near Cheviot. The terminal in Christchurch is at Marley’s Hill, and at Wellington at Mount Albert.
