SPECIAL COURSES FOR TEACHERS
SCIENCE TRAINING IN CHRISTCHURCH
The teaching of physics and chemistry under the new syllabus for university entrance and scholarship examinations will be the chief topic of a four-day refresher course to be held in Christchurch late in August. Those attending will be fifth and sixthform teachers.
Preference will be given to South Island applicants, but North Island teachers will also be invited, as only one course is being held on this occasion for post-primary schools. The Refresher Course Committee set up by the Education Department has also announced a busy programme for the Christmas holidays, when . six groups of teachers will have courses, most of two sections running concurrently in the North and South Islands. Where the courses will be held has not yet been decided. They will all be in January. For post-primary teachers, there will be courses in English and general science, each divided into north and south sections.
Primary school teachers’ refresher courses will all be held in January. There will be North and South Island sections on English, music, and for ‘‘middle school” teachers of classes of Primer 4, Standard I and Standard 11. Further interest in special classes has been stimulated by the recent ‘visit of Mr James Lumsden, the British Education Ministry’s chief administrative officer for this type* of education. New Zealand special class teachers will have a refresher course in January, probably in the North Island.
