AKAROA BOROUGH RATE

LEVY INCREASED BY COUNCIL A general rate of 9d in the £ will be levied by the Akaroa Borough Council for the current year, as against a general rate of 7Jd last year. The new rate includes an amount of 7-8 d for jvater supply extension. Water supply and sewer charges to non-ratepayers will be raised by 10s a year. At a recent meeting of the council, Mr P. G. Shave, of Oamaru, who on May 9 was appointed Town Clerk in succeed Mr P. G. Riches, wrote saying that he could not take up the appointment. The Mayor (Mr W. A. Newton) said that Mr Shave had been appointed secretary to the Oamaru Harbour Board. It was decided to ask Mr L. G. Eade, clerk” of the Southbridge Town Board, if he would be interested in accepting the position. A request from Mr R. R. Roberts, of Christchurch, for permission to erect a boat shed on the foreshore of Beach road, which was recently widened for tree planting and beautifying, was referred to the council by the Akaroa County Council. It was decided to reply that the borough did not favour the erection of any type of building on the Beach road foreshore.
