GROCERY NOTES Business in the grocery trade is still keeping up with the same period last month. Grocers are finding that new lines which have been arriving over the last week or so are selling readily, particularly English jams and biscuits. Overseas ships are still arriving steadily, particularly from England, but goods have been slow reaching merchants’ warehouses after being discharged at Lyttelton. . Greaseproof Paper.—This is a commodity that is still in rather short supply. The price, however, is considerably lower than it was a year ago, when higher prices were being paid by importers. At the present time, deliveries are slow from Norway, the main source of supply, and orders placed will not be delivered until the New Year. New Macaroni Pack.—A South Canterbury manufacturer is introducing two new macaroni packs. The two lines *are attractively packed in transparent bags. The first one is a macaroni shell which up till now has had to be imported, and the second is known as “alphabets and numbers.” Both lines are reasonably priced, and should meet with a ready sale. Tapioca.—The tapioca market has been reasonably steady, although it is down compared with, last year. However, the price is not cheap enough to make tapioca the seller it was in pre-war years. Pearl tapioca, in particular is today a slow seller. Imported Jam.—Today imported tinned jam is arriving on the local markets at considerably lower prices than the New Zealand counterpart. A recent shipment from South Africa of apficot jam in 21b tins is showing a difference of up to 10s a dozen cheaper. Jamaican marmalade, which 15 expected before long, will also show a considerable difference in price.
