CHEQUES SCATTERED BY WIND

Paper money representing a considerable sum was scattered to the winds in Gisborne on Friday. Shortly before 5 p.m., while a clerk was returning to a bank with a case of cheques collected at other banks, the eaten of the case slipped and the lid fell open. The cheques, caught by a strong wind, were whipped away. Some went under parked cars, some across the road, and others floated high into the air and down the street. Pedestrians quickly went to the rescue. When most of the cheques had been returned to the clerk, she recruited help and the search continued until about 5.45 p.m., when darkness stopped the seekers. By then, they had collected all but three of the cheques. The missing ones are thought to have been blown on to the roofs of nearby buildings. The cheques had all been cancelled.
