PETROL TAX PAYMENT

WITHHOLDING OF ONE QUARTER EFFECT ON CITY COUNCIL If the payment for the last quarter of the financial year of petrol tax allocation is not made, a loss of about £9OOO will be suffered by Christchurch. This was reported as the estimate of the City Treasurer by the finance committee to the City Council last evening. The council has advised the Municipal Association that it strongly supports representations to the Minister of Finance that the quarter's allocation was a debit due to local bodies as at March 31. "The Treasury has now advised the Transport Department that the authority no longer exists to enable such a payment to be made and that it is the intention that any amount which was not allocated before March 31, 1954, was to be absorbed in future payments irom the National Roads Fund, ’ said the letter from the Municipal Association.
