ARRIVAL OF SHINING CUCKOO

SURVEY UNDERTAKEN A survey on the arrival of the shining cuckoo in N?w Zealand after its winter sojourn in the Solomon Islands is being undertaken by a Dunedin man, Mr W. A. Williamson. He wants residents of Canterbury who know the bird well to watch and listen for it, and to note not only its first appearance but also when it becomes plentiful in the district. The regional organiser for the Ornithological Society in Christchurch, Mr E. W. Dawson, of 271 Papanui road, is collecting data for the survey. Preliminary results have already been published in “Nortornis,” the quarterly journal of the society. These show that earliest reliable reports received of the arrival of the bird have been on August 7. However, they can be expected any time now until the main body arrives in October.
