WATERSIDE WORKERS’ HALL

REQUEST FOR CHEAPER WATER REFUSED A request that the council consider supplying water to the waterfront workers’ hall free of charge, or that the rate charged for water, 2s 9d a thousand gallons, be substantially reduced, was received by the Lyttelton Borough Council last evening from Captain C. D. Watt, branch manager of the Waterfront Industrial Commission. The letter said that the building included the Health Department’s first-aid clinic, which was open to all workers and to the general public, and that, although managed by the commission, the hall remained the oroperty of the Lyttelton Hardoi i Board, which was supplied with free of charge. ,Cr A. R Champion moved that the ch -ce remain unchanged. He said try although the hall was built by harbour Board, it was not a Board nor a Government bu ding The motion was seconded by Cr E. H. Paulsen. W- B. Laing moved an amendment that the request be referred to a r SP rnmi '^ e € for consideration. The whole set-up whereby the council was compelled to supply water c jT»rge to the Harbour Board and the Railways .rent should be investigated, said Cr. W. Morris. Hp said that it started in a small way but it was now costinc the borough sum eac h year for the enormous amount of water used The motion was earned.
