U.S. CLAY COURT TITLE (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) CHICAGO, July 18. Bernard Bartzen, of Texas, beat Tony Trabert, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0, 6-2, today to win the men’s national clay courts singles title. It was the first major singles tournament triumph for the 26-year-old Bartzen, a sporting goods salesman. Trabert was seeded first in the tournament. Bartzen, ranked seventh nationally, was seeded No. 4. He gave a foretaste of what was to come today when he defeated sec-ond-seeded Vic Seixas on Friday, 7-5, 6-4, 6-2. Today Bartzen, a left-hander, played tne same type of defensive game that brought him victory over Seixas. He relied on his steady ground strokes and fre- ■ quently caught his opponent flat-footed with carefully placed drives when Trabert was at the net. Miss Maureen Connolly, of California, beat Miss Doris Hart of Florida, 6-3, 6-1, to win the national clay courts women’s singles championship. Miss Connolly, holder of every major women’s championship, took only 45 minutes to dispose of Miss Hart, a’ clay courts champion in 1950.
DAVIS CUP MATCHES (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON. July 18. Sweden won the doubles match to take a 2-1 lead over Belgium in the Davis Cup European Zone semi-final at Baastad, Sweden, today. Sven Davidson and Torsten Johansson beat Philippe Washer and Jackie Brichant, 6-3, 6-8, 3-6, 9-7, 6-3. The remaining two singles will be played tomorrow. At Port of Spain, Trinidad, the United States, which already held a 3-0 winning lead, won both singles matches against the West Indies for a 5-0 victory in the first round of the American Zone Davis Cup tie. The United States will now meet Cuba in the zone semi-final. Results were: Hamilton Richardson beat Derek Phang (British Guiana), 6-0, 6-0, 6-2; Hal Burrows beat Geoffrey Inglefield (Trinidad), 6-0, 6-0, 6-3. Canada advanced to the semi-final of the American zone Davis Cup tennis competition when Lome Main beat Andres Hammersley, of Chile, 6-4, 11-13, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3. Main’s victory gave Canada a 3-1 lead over Chile in the best of five rounds. In a later match, Luis Ayala, of Chile, beat Bob Bedard, 6-1, 6-3, 6-1. The Canadians Will now meet Mexico, which beat Japan two weeks ago in another first round test.
