WEIGHTS FOR MAJOR SPRING EVENTS CARIOCA HEADS LISTS (N.Z.P.A.—Reuter—Copyright) SYDNEY, July 19. For the second year in succession Carloca has been given the top weight lor the four major spring races—the Epsom Handicap, the Metropolitan, and the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups. He has been given 9st 101 b for the Epsom Handicap (one mile), the Metropolitan (one mile and five furlongs), and the Caulfield Cup (one mile and a half), and 9st 91b for the Melbourne Cup (two mites). Bookmakers are not taking any chances with Carioca, and despite his big weight, already have him among the early favourites for the four races. He is equal favourite with the New Zealand horses, Lancaster and Gendarme for the Metropolitan, second favourite for the Epsom, and also for the Melbourne field ° n the thlrd line for the Caul * Last year Carioca was handicapped to carry the maximum weight of 9st 71b for both the Epsom Handicap and the Metrogolitan. He had 9st 81b for both the Cauleld and Melbourne Cups. He finished an unlucky third in the Epsom, and then came out two days later and won the Metropolitan. Carioca did not start in either the Caulfield or Melbourne Cups. This year there are no maximum weight conditions for either the Epsom or the Metropolitan. n, The x Ebgpsb horse, King’s Own (late Mountain King) has been given second top weight of 9st 41b in the Melbourne Cup. He has 9st 31b in the Caulfield Cup, and 9st. 21b for both the Epsom and Metropolitan. The New Zealand horse Lancaster and his stablemate, Euphrates, which on Saturday won the Doomben Cup, have each been given 9st 31b in the Melbourne Cup. But in the Metropolitan, Euphrates, with 9-3, bas been handicapped to give away 11b to Lancaster.

Lancaster Favoured Lancaster carried 8-8 when he won the Brisbane Cup over two miles in May, but failed with 9-4 in the Doomben Cup on Saturday. Bookmakers have Lancaster an early favourite for both the Metropolitan and Melbourne Cup. Top-weights and the New Zealand horses are:
