CANADIAN TOURNEY FLETCHER WINS BY FOUR STROKES (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) VANCOUVER, July 18. Pat Fletcher, a 38-year-old professional from Saskatoon, won the Canadian open golf championship on Saturday with a four-under-scratch 280 for the 72 holes. Fletcher, the first Canadian to win the open for many years, collected 3200 dollars in prize money and two cups, one of which was presented to him by John Landy, of Australia, the world’s champion miler. Fletcher won by a four-stroke margin over Gordie Brydson. of Toronto, and Bill Welch, of Washington State, who tied for second place with 284. Fletcher recovered from an unsteady first nine and scored a brilliant 32 in the second half to give him a final round of 71. N.Z. TEAM’S TOUR THREE MEMBERS RETURN TO DOMINION (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 19. Three of New Zealand’s six-man representative golf team returned home by air from England this afternoon. They are the captain, A. Gibbs (Otago). T. Jeffrey (New Plymouth), and A. R. Timms (Otago). While they were in Vancouver they saw D. L. Woon playing in the Canadian open championship. After a good first round of 71 Woon took 77 and then 85. His bad third round eliminated him. Woon, S. Jones, and B. M. Silk, the other three members of the team, are returning home independently.
