SALMONELLOSIS OUTBREAK
Incidence Of Disease 1 Among Cattle MEDICAL OFFICER’S COMMENTS Six more cases of salmonellosis reported in the Christchurch Health District last week brought the total cases since the outbreak began to about 50. The Deputy-Medical Officer of Health (Dr. H. T. Knights) said yesterday that the figures indicated that the outbreak was diminishing, but they also indicated the risk to which the community was open at all times when there was a raw milk supply, because of. the high incidence of salmonellosis in cattle. Animals were the most probable reservoir of infection, Dr. Knights said. Salmonellosis was widespread in cattle and sheep throughout the country. Dysentery at Chathams Fifteen more cases of bacillary dysentery have been reported from the Chatham Islands. Dr. Knights said a slight increase from time to time was not unexpected during the normal course of such an outbreak.
Other notifiable diseases reported at Christchurch were: streptococcal sore throat (including scarlet fever) 43, tuberculosis 4. erysipelas 1. One case of streptococcal sore throat was reported at Greymouth.
