Display By Soviet Gymnasts
(Rec. 8 p.m.) July 18. The Russian Prime Minister (Mr Malenkov) and other Government leaders sat in the grandstand of Moscow’s Dyhame Stadium today to watch a giant display by gymnasts from all parts of the Soviet Union. The stadium was packed by 90.000 Russians for the display, in celebration of “Physical Culture Day.” With Mr Malenkov in the grandstand were Mr Nikita Khrushchev, First Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party’s Central Committee, Marshal Klementi Voroshilov, Mr A,pastas Mikoyan, who is Trade Minister, and Mr Lazar Kaganovich, a peppfy-Premier. A surprise visitor was Mr Walter Ulbricht, the East German DeputyPremier, who was beckoned by Mr Malenkov to a seat at his right hand in the front row.
Other forpigp guests invjted fop the 30-minute march past and display included Mr AvPry Brpndage, American President of the International Olympics Committee, as well as sports leaders from Finland, Sweden, Switzerland. Italy, Austria, Egypt, the Lebanon, and France. The vast stadium was decorated with portraits of Lenin, Stalin, and presentday leaders. The display ended with a group of gymnasts forming the word “Peace” in English, French, and German.
