GRAMOPHONE RECORD LOAN COLLECTIONS
Sir,—During a recent visit to Dunedin I had the opportunity of playing gramophone recordings from the Public Library’s large collection. I was very impressed with the number and variety of records and was able to hear many works which I could not afford to buy. The records are hired for 6d a single record or 2s 6d for a complete work; long playing records are also available for the same fee as an equivalent number of “78” discs. Now that the scheme has become established I understand that it is selfsupporting. I feel sure that a scheme like this would find many supporters in Christchurch. Perhaps it would be possible to establish such a record collection by public donation or by a grant. Surely this is a cause worthy of some of the proceeds from the students’ revue.—Yours, etc., N.M.H. July 19, 1954.
