MEETING AT WAIMATE

RED TINGESQUARE DANCE FOR DOUBLE CHIEF LIGHT AND TEST FLIGHT IN FORM Heavy rain fell in Waimate yesterday, and there was no sign of the weather clearing for today. The track will oe heavy for the Waimate District Hunt Club’s steeplechase meeting, which marks the opening of centennial celebrations in Waimate today. W. E. Hazlett’s pair. Chief Light and Test Flight, will be at very short odds for the Studholme Hack and Hunters Hurdles, and this bracket stands out as a betting proposition. Chief Light has won at his two attempts over hurdles, and Test Flight was a somewhat unlucky third in the Tekapo Hurdles at Washdyke at his latest start. Brutus and Exchequer should also race W’ell in this event. Red Tinge is now reported to be a definite starter in the first leg of the double, the Waihao Hack Handicap. He is entitled to solid support after his good i showing on the first day at Trentham, when he finished ninth after leading to the straight entrance. Most opposition to Red Tinge should come from Roi du Bois, a winner at Oamaru and runner-up to Silver Trumpet at Washdyke. On the last occasion he was promoted to first after an inquiry. Direct Passage and Canyon Maid may do best of the others in this field. E. G. Low has now been engaged to ride Square Dance in the second leg of the double, the Redcliff Hack and Hunters’ Flat Handicap. This Timanova horse has raced well enough at recent showings to have a strong winning chance in this field. Owl’s Way and Boniface appear the most likely to trouble Square Dance in this field, and First Whack is capable of a surprise. Fort Silver is selected to win the Te Waimate Centennial Steeplechase. Glenlivet, Battle Signal and Scorpion are others with good prospects. Flying Owl Selected

Because of the weather and the state of the track, the Novice Stakes field may be reduced enough to be run as one race. Flying Owl is selected to win, out strong opposition should come from Silver Trumpet, if that runner can handle the turning track. Regal Robe and Brilliant Right should also race well. Gold Tip is expected to gain his fourth win for the season in the Morven Handicap. He is a good front-runner, and the distance of one mile and 150 yards will be much to his liking. Taj and Cloudy View should add interest to the finish of this contest. Sentinel, Gabriel’s Gully, and Debden are favoured for the Waimate Hunt Cup Steeplechase. Algiers (Morven Handicap) and Exodus (Studholme Hack Hurdles) will not run.. Russley Lad, which was previously reported as a doubtful starter for the Waihao Hack Handicap, will now take his place in the field. White Satin (Redcliff Handicap) is now' a definite starter. Selections are:— 11 a.m.—Hunt Cup Steeples: Sentinel, Gabriel’s Gully, Debden. 11.50 a.m.—Studholme Hurdles: Chief Light-Test Flight bracket, Exchequer, Brutus. 12.35 p.m.—Novice Stakes: Flying OwlTopical Cim bracket.
