MAORI CONCERT PARTY

MUCH-TRAVELLED GROUP IN CHRISTCHURCH To help raise funds for a Maori community centre in Invercargill, a place where the Maori language can be taught and instruction given in Maori arts and crafts, the Te Awapuni Maori concert party from Hawke’s Bav has been giving concerts in South Island towns during the last two months. The party is now in Christchurch and will give a concert at the Civic Theatre on Monday night. The beauty of Maori singing, the rhythm of the poi dances, the excitement of the hakas and traditional action fl songs all have their place in the party’s programme. There are 18 members in the group, their ages varying from five to 22, and they are led by Mrs P. Whatarau. The Te Awapuni party is from an East Coast club which regularly provides entertainment for charity. This afternoon the concert party will entertain patients at the Cashmere Sanatorium.
