N.Z. TEAM FOR GAMES
FIRST 30 ARRIVE AT VANCOUVER (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) VANCOUVER, July 15. Although few. if any of the passengers were aware of it at the time, there was some anxiety at the Vancouver Airport this afternoon over the arrival of the Qantas Super-Con-stellation carrying the first 30 of the New Zealand contingent to the British Empire Games. When the big aircraft was about half an hour out of Vancouver one of the four engines gave trouble and crash waggons and ambulances were alerted. But the aircraft landed safely. The New Zealanders reached Vancouver at the end of their 7000-mile flight after a calm three-hour journey over the final stage from San Francisco. They were met at the airport by British Empire Games officials who. were also welcoming parties of South Africans and Rhodesians. The teams were taken to the Vancouver University campus where they will be quartered for the next few weeks. The New Zealanders moved off from the airport in a fleet of luxurious cars. The last stage of the air journey, over a dense cloud bank covering the American States was the least interesting since the team left New Zealand, but there was an occasional superb view of distant 14,000 ft mountain peaks. The Duke of Edinburgh will have supper on August 6 with 850 Commonwealth athletes and officials in Vancouver for the Empire Games. The Duke will arrive at Vancouver on August 3 to see the last few days of the Games.
